Dr. Gillian Eastwood is a post-doctoral disease ecologist with The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station [CAES] with a background in One Health and vector-borne disease research. She will first be discussing vector-borne disease in general, including global examples of arthropod vectors, emerging pathogens such as dengue or West Nile virus, and factors affecting disease emergence and transmission. There will then be a focus on mosquitoes and ticks in the Connecticut region describing the surveillance work done at the station, invasive vector species such as Aedes albopictus, and several ongoing medical entomology research projects. There will be a demonstration of mosquito-monitoring trap devices that are used at field sites, and sample specimens of mosquito species at their different life-stages, plus opportunity for discussion and questions.
Groups of 10+, please reserve space prior to event.
